Based in London, Klezmer Foygl is an exciting new ensemble playing both traditional and original Klezmer repertoire, and this spring they’re touring Dorset as part of the programme by local charity, Artsreach.
Meaning ‘Klezmer Songbird’ in Yiddish, the quartet is led by clarinettist John Macnaughton, and features some of the UK’s leading Klezmer musicians; Josh Middleton (Don Kipper, Raka Balkan Band) on accordion, Theo Malka-Wishart (Oysland) on double bass, and Christina Borgenstierna (She’Koyokh) on percussion.
Individually, members of Klezmer Foygl have toured internationally, performed for both television and theatre, and played at some of the UK’s leading venues, including BBC Maida Vale Studios, The Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall, and The Barbican.
Together the group is deeply grounded in traditional Yiddish music, whilst simultaneously seeking to innovate upon it, and bring a contemporary London twist to its music. Woven with stories along the way, audiences can expect a diverse repertoire of dance tunes, ritual melodies, and virtuosic improvisations.
