Swanage Literary Festival: Joanna Quinn – The Whalebone Theatre
Joanna will be here to discuss her award-winning, debut novel ‘The Whalebone Theatre’, which explores themes of courage, family, self-discovery and the impact of war.It is the story of an old English manor house on the Dorset coast with crumbling chimneys, ivy clad walls and a library full of dusty books and the children that live there.
The story follows the family’s history between the two world wars from 1919 to 1945 and is the story of a theatre being made from a whale’s ribcage when it is washed up on the beach. It recounts how the children bring the theatre to life, educating themselves through reading and their own life experiences.
As the children grow into adulthood and WW2 arrives they find themselves with different dramatic roles to play…
