Bar Manager

The Mowlem is a performance and cinema venue that occupies an unparalleled beach side location in Swanage, Dorset. It has been an enduring cultural and community resource for the people of Swanage for over 160 years and is currently undertaking an exciting period of development.

We are looking for an experienced bar manager to join the staff management team and lead the popular and developing events bar within the building. The post includes the continuing development of the Showbar area as an entertainment and community space as well as supporting the management team as a duty manager.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent, Flexible working hours
Salary: £27,000 – £30,000

The post will be subject to a 3-month probation review and after this an annual performance review.

Job Specification
  1. Management of Showbar staff
  • Leading a small team of bar staff by example and reporting to the Operations Manager
  • Successfully working with diverse personalities in the staff, trustees and patrons
  • Ability to deescalate challenging situations that may occur with patrons in a bar environment.
  • Creating effective schedules and quickly resolving conflicts to ensure that bar is well staffed during peak hours.
  • Creating a positive work environment for staff and encouraging their career development
  • Assisting with recruiting, training and motivating staff
  • Conduct annual performance reviews with Operations Manager for Showbar staff.
  1. Management of Showbar
  • Creating a welcoming environment for customers
  • Dealing with customer feedback and providing adequate solutions to customer complaints
  • Procurement of consistent, high-quality beverages and bar snacks and monitoring their inventory to ensure adequate stock
  • Meeting sales and profitability targets
  • Monitoring inventory of beverages to ensure adequate stock and actioning the deficits and issues
  • Overseeing the cleanliness of staff and the physical bar area and paying attention to possible health hazards and regulation violations e.g. food hygiene
  • Keeping up to date with licensing legislation and taking legal responsibility for the premises e.g. current alcohol license
  • Ensuring beer and wine are kept in good condition.

  1. Management of Showbar events
  • Meet requirements to increase entertainment and community activity within the Showbar to align with the Mowlem Business Plan and the annual budget. It is anticipated that the post holder would demonstrate creativity and excellent networking skills both internally and externally to achieve this.
  • Attend relevant committees in an advisory capacity when required for discussions on bar management and events
  • Provide measurement and evaluation reports to measure success of Showbar events.

  • Act as duty manager as specified by the Mowlem Operations Manager
  • Be part of regular staff management meetings
Person Specification
  • Successful employment history managing a busy bar environment including stock and quality control.
  • Experience of managing and rostering bar staff
  • Experience of managing and evaluating entertainment or community activity in a public setting – by preference, an arts venue.
