Senior Technician

The Mowlem is a performance and cinema venue that occupies an unparalleled beach side location in Swanage, Dorset. It has been an enduring cultural and community resource for the people of Swanage for over 160 years and is currently undertaking an exciting period of development.

The Mowlem is recruiting for an experienced senior technician with a wide background in top tier lighting, sound, AV, stage management and client service. The technical team currently covers amateur shows, visiting professional companies, festivals and high-profile acts across three spaces within the building – a 400-seater auditorium, an 80-seater community and arts space and the Showbar.

The applicant will have proven ability to supervise staff and will line manage a technician. The new post will join the recently formed staff management team with responsibility for the day-to-day event operation from set up to completion, handling logistics and ensuring events meet the highest quality. Ideally the successful candidate would be resourceful, knowledgeable and a strong team player happy to work on their own and within a team.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent, to be available and able to work flexible hours.
Salary: £26,000 – £29,000 per annum

The post will be subject to a 3-month probation review and after this an annual performance review.

Job Specification
  • You will have a strong demonstrable knowledge on live sound production as well as other areas within a busy working theatre such as Lighting, AV and Counterweight flying.
  • An excellent knowledge of best working practice as well as health and safety legislation in order to champion health and safety practices, ensuring adherence to best practices and managing relevant paperwork.
  • Serve as the main point of technical contact for incoming productions/events.
  • Oversee and actively participate in the load-in, setup, design, operation, and pack-down of events.
  • Supervise and operate lighting, sound, AV, fly systems, and other components of live events.
  • Be comfortable and able to work at heights, undertake manual handling and heavy lifting safety.
  • Have prior experience working with EOS family consoles (ion), and/ or Allen & Heath consoles (SQ, QU).
  • High level IT skills related to managing cinema set up and maintaining equipment.
  • Plan, maintain and enhance technical infrastructures, equipment, and services.
  • Attend meetings, site visits, rehearsals, and production meetings as required.
  • Organise and provide necessary training for both full-time and part-time staff.
  • Manage and provide leadership to other technicians with an ability to inspire junior paid technical staff and volunteers.
  • Act as duty manager as specified by the Mowlem Operations Manager
  • Be part of regular staff management meetings
  • Undertake any other duties within the general scope and grade of the post as required.
